Shanghai contributed 34% of China’s EV exports in H1

Shanghai exported 60,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in the first half of the year, an increase of 752.9 percent year-over-year, accounting for 34.3 percent of China’s total, according to Shanghai Customs.

The figure represents 29.3% of Shanghai’s total vehicle exports, up from 14.9% in 2020.

Shanghai exported 206,000 vehicles in the first half of the year, up 165.9 percent year-over-year. The city’s auto exports were worth RMB 20.64 billion ($319 billion) in the first half, up 191.5 percent year-over-year, surpassing one-fifth of China’s exports in both volume and value.

Shanghai’s auto exports shifted from developing countries to markets in Europe, America and Australia. In the first half of the year, Shanghai exported a total of 63,000 vehicles to the EU, Australia and US markets, accounting for 30.5% of total exports.

SAIC Group was the largest exporter of automobiles in the first half, with overseas sales of 265,000 units, up 112.8 percent year-over-year, according to a ranking by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Overseas sales of MG and Maxus reached 166,000 units, up 132 percent year-over-year; in Europe, MG and Maxus sold more than 12,000 units, ranking among the top markets in the UK, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark and Iceland, SAIC said.

Tesla China’s exports also brought a big contribution, with 5,017 units exported in June, according to China Passenger Car Association.
