Xpeng Motors established a new company, Wuhan Xpeng Intelligent Manufacturing Co, in Wuhan, central China, on Aug. 16, according to data provider Qichacha.

The company’s legal representative is Xpeng co-founder and president Xia Heng, with registered capital of RMB 50 million ($7.717 million).

The company’s business scope includes intelligent vehicle equipment manufacturing, battery manufacturing, tester sales, and intelligent control system integration.

On July 31, Xpeng’s new factory project in Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone was officially launched, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion of production capacity.

Xpeng will build its third-generation smart platform here, which will be the company’s first global platform, He Xiaopeng, the company’s chairman and CEO, said at the launch ceremony.

“We are confident that the Wuhan facility will be able to reach full production soon after achieving mass production,” he said.

The project covers an area of about 1,500 acres (1,000,000 square meters) and will include workshops for stamping, welding, painting, final assembly, battery and electric drive.

The project has a planned capacity of 100,000 units and will achieve an annual output of more than RMB 30 billion when it reaches production, Xpeng said in an announcement.

Currently, Xpeng has set up at least three companies in Wuhan, including vehicle manufacturing, parts manufacturing and auto sales.

Xpeng was founded in 2014 and released its first model, the G3 SUV, in September 2016.

The model was OEM’d by Haima Motor, though Xpeng’s OEM agreement with it is set to expire at the end of this year, after which Xpeng’s models will all be produced in its own factories.

Xpeng currently owns a factory in Zhaoqing, Guangdong province, and last September began construction of a second factory in Guangzhou that is expected to be in production by the end of 2022.

Earlier today, the company said it had started work on the second phase of its Zhaoqing plant, which will increase annual production capacity from 100,000 to 200,000 units.
