A fire incident with a model that no longer continues to be sold has put Xpeng Motors (NYSE: XPEV, HKG: 9868) in the spotlight, and the company has responded.
An Xpeng G3 caught fire in Shenzhen on the night of March 28, and photos from the scene show a large amount of flames appearing underneath the car, according to a report by local automotive media Auto Home today.

There was an explosion at the site and firefighters tried to extinguish the fire, but the whole car was still burned to scrap, according to Jiemian, another local media outlet.
In response, Xpeng said that on the night of March 28, Mr. He’s 2019 Xpeng G3 was involved in a fire accident in Longhua District, Shenzhen, and no one was injured, according to Jiemian.
Xpeng will fully cooperate with relevant departments to investigate the cause of the incident, continue to follow up on the results and assist customers with related matters, the report said.
Although fuel car fire incidents also happen, electric vehicle (EV) fires are especially in the public eye given that EVs are a new species.
The G3 is Xpeng’s first model that went on sale in 2018. Xpeng unveiled the Xpeng G3i, a facelift of the G3 SUV, on July 9 last year.
Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng said at the time that the company wanted the G3i to be the smart SUV of choice for young people priced under RMB 200,000 ($30,870).
The G3 was produced by Haima Motor’s plant in Zhengzhou, central China, while the G3i are produced by Xpeng’s own plant in Zhaoqing, Guangdong.
Deliveries of the G3i began in September last year and since then Xpeng has referred to the G3 and G3i figures collectively as the G3 series when publishing monthly delivery figures.
Cumulative deliveries of the G3 series since last September are 18,259 units, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.
