46 different cars were exported in July 2020 – total cars exported was a little over 34k units
Car exports in July continue to be adversely impacted by Covid-19 situation, as is evident from the negative YoY growth posted by most cars. Around 70% of cars have posted negative exports growth in July and that too in double digits. Overall, a total of 34,183 units were exported in July, as compared to 60,854 units in July last year. This returns a YoY loss of -43.83%.
Ford EcoSport takes the lead
Looking at the list of top exported cars, it’s clear that customer preferences in overseas markets differ dramatically as compared to that of customers back home. Most exported car in July was Ford EcoSport with 5,767 units sent overseas. This is an impressive YoY gain of 59.49%, as compared to 3,616 units exported in July last year. EcoSport is popular in India as well, but it trails behind several other products such as Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300. In July, EcoSport domestic sales were 2,438 units.
Next in the list is Volkswagen Vento with 5,455 units exported in July. YoY export numbers have improved by 18.28%, as compared to 4,612 units exported in July last year. Vento is another product that has increased demand in international markets as compared to domestic market. In the domestic market, Vento trails behind the likes of Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. In July, Vento domestic sales were 210 units.
At number three is Chevrolet Beat with 4,595 units exported in July. YoY exports are down -32.96%, as compared to 6,854 units exported in July last year. As may be recalled, Chevrolet has stopped producing cars for the domestic market.
At number four is the new entrant Seltos with 2,405 units exported in July. In the domestic market, Seltos had briefly emerged as the top selling SUV before being overtaken by next-gen Creta. At number five is Maruti Spresso, another new entrant that was launched in September last year. Export numbers are 2,182 units in July.
Cars with positive growth
Other cars in the top ten list of exports include Nissan Sunny (1,624 units), Maruti Swift (1,566), Volkswagen Polo (1,373), Maruti Baleno (1,240), and Hyundai Aura (1,091). Of these, only Swift has registered positive growth. Swift exports are up 84.89%, as compared to 847 units exported in July last year. Another new entrant in top ten is Hyundai Aura that was launched earlier this year in January.
Other cars with positive growth include Jeep Compass (718 units), Nissan Micra (634), Hyundai Venue (374), Mahindra Bolero (35), and Skoda Rapid (12). Cars that are bestsellers in the domestic market such as Creta, Ertiga, Verna, Brezza, Eeco, XL6, etc. have all returned negative growth in July exports.
